Breaking Down the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti Specs: What You Need to Know

Nvidia and AMD encountered a problem with their next-generation GPUs, specifically in their pricing strategy. The Radeon RX 6800 XT and GeForce RTX 3080 were previously able to achieve a favorable balance between performance and price. While these GPUs were not as powerful as the flagship models, they still retained most of their gaming capabilities. However, the newly released RTX 4080 and RX 7900 XT failed to replicate the same level of ‘frames for the dollar.’ Although the recently released RTX 4070 Ti partially addressed this issue, it reinforces the notion that substantial performance improvements and significant price reductions are a thing of the past. In this article, we will take a look into Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti Specs and performance.

When Nvidia decided to “unlaunch” its 12GB RTX 4080, controversy was inevitable for the RTX 4070 Ti. The spec sheet indicates that the RTX 4070 Ti is just the 12GB RTX 4080 with a name change, an odd move so early in Nvidia’s RTX 40-series generation. Nvidia has adjusted the price to match, lowering the announced list price of $900 by $100. However, early pre-orders suggest that the card will likely sell for more than that, and it doesn’t measure up to the best graphics cards in terms of performance. Although the RTX 4070 Ti has some positive features, such as DLSS 3 and excellent thermal management, its high pricing and trailing raw performance are significant drawbacks.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti specs

The RTX 4070 Ti is a rebranded version of the failed RTX 4080 12GB, as confirmed by its spec sheet, aligning with the PC hardware world’s suspicion. Nvidia adjusted the pricing to $800 to match the cut-down version.

Spec sheet of Nvidia’s 40-series GPU

The RTX 4070 Ti loses 21% of the CUDA cores and 4GB less GDDR6X memory compared to the RTX 4080. The Tensor and ray tracing cores also decrease by 21%, indicating that it should not have been placed in the xx80 class. The power is reduced to a manageable 285 watts, a significant drop from the RTX 4090’s 450W TGP. However, Nvidia’s recently released Ada Lovelace GPUs have shown that the listed power draw is often higher than what is necessary for demanding games due to their efficiency.

The RTX 4070 Ti has a new name and a more suitable price now. The memory specification, however, remains a concern. It features 12GB GDDR6X memory with a significantly lower total memory bandwidth due to a 192-bit bus. This is similar to the issue the previous-generation RTX 3060 faced, albeit with slower GDDR6 memory. The RTX 3070 Ti from the previous generation has about 40% more bandwidth than the RTX 4070 Ti. While the RTX 4070 Ti performs well in my results, higher resolutions put more stress on memory bandwidth, and its advantage at 1440p and 1080p begins to diminish.

Ray Tracing:

Nvidia’s claim of dominance in ray tracing has been challenged by the RTX 4070 Ti. At 4K, it barely outperforms the RTX 3090 and RX 7900 XTX. The RTX 4070 Ti’s limited memory bus plays a significant role at this resolution. However, at 1440p, the RTX 4070 Ti beats the RX 7900 XTX by 10% and its closest competitor, the RX 7900 XT, by 19%. At 1080p, the gap widens further, with the RTX 4070 Ti approaching the ray tracing performance of the RTX 4080.

The importance of ray tracing in games is subjective; it can offer significant improvements in some titles, but it can also cause a significant performance drop in others. AMD’s competing GPUs can hold their own against Nvidia’s current generation in ray tracing, with the major advantage for the RTX 4070 Ti being support for DLSS 3. This upscaling technology includes a frame generation feature that can double or sometimes triple frame rates in games.

1440p Gaming Benchmarks: Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti Specs and Performance

All games are tested at max or ultra settings across all the GPUs and found that most games delivered performance exceeding 100fps at 1440p. If you have a 1440p 144Hz monitor, you’ll comfortably hit high frame rates with the RTX 4070 Ti, which makes games feel much smoother than 60Hz.

The RTX 4070 Ti is around 20% faster than the RTX 3080 at 1440p and even outperforms the RTX 3090 comfortably, providing solid performance for $799. Shadow of the Tomb Raider pushes above 200fps, and even Cyberpunk 2077 runs above 100fps at ultra settings.

But if you compare RTX 4070 Ti to AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT, it traded blows for the price points, with AMD comfortably winning in titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion, and Cyberpunk 2077.

4K Gaming Benchmarks: Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti Specs and Performance

According to the results presented below the RTX 4080 is still 20% faster than the RTX 4070 Ti at 4K. While the RTX 4070 Ti beats the RTX 3090, it falls short of AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT in Cyberpunk 2077, which only hit 51fps. Both the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4070 Ti require DLSS 2 or DLSS 3 to boost their performance to reach 60fps.

Enabling DLSS 3 in Cyberpunk 2077 resulted in an average frame rate of 88fps with psycho ray tracing and DLSS 3 performance mode enabled. DLSS 3 was also able to double the frame rates at 4K while DLSS 2 provided a slight performance boost to Microsoft Flight Simulator, pushing it to reach 60fps.

Lower than expected performance was encountered in CS: GO at both 1440p and 4K. The same dips were reproduced by Nvidia on the RTX 4080, indicating the presence of a bug. Despite this, an average frame rate in excess of 240fps at 4K was still achieved, making the most of even the best 4K monitors available.

Temperature and Power: Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti Specs and Performance

Compared with AMD’s next-gen graphics cards, Nvidia’s efficiency and temperature control in the Ada Lovelace generation is impressive. The RTX 4070 Ti has a high TGP, but rarely hits its power limit. It stayed cool and quiet, running around 200W to 230W, occasionally dipping down to 150W at lower resolutions. The unsung advantage of the RTX 4070 Ti over the RX 7900 XT is that it runs cooler, quieter, and more efficiently.

The Asus Tuf Gaming models stayed cool and quiet, never going above 65 degrees Celsius. The RTX 4070 Ti is a great choice for those who want a powerful but quiet graphics card.

Final Remarks on RTX 4070Ti

The RTX 4070 Ti has positive points, but it’s essentially a rebranded RTX 4080 12GB with only a small price cut. Although $100 off is decent, most cards are unlikely to sell at the listed price of $900 without a Founder’s Edition design. The RX 7900 XT from AMD is its biggest competitor and is almost 12% faster. While the RTX 4070 Ti offers DLSS 3 at a more affordable price, you trade some performance compared to the competition for that feature.

If you can find the RTX 4070 Ti for $799, it’s a great 4K card. However, with no Founders Edition and overclocked versions from various manufacturers, it’s unclear what the pricing will be. AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX cards are better choices if you want something more than the RTX 4070 Ti, especially instead of the $1,199 RTX 4080.
